This article was originally published on SimGoodie.no on December 16, 2014. It has been restored from the SimGoodie legacy archive as a historical reference for players looking back at early Sims 4 content updates.
The Sims 4 launched in September 2014 with a lean feature set, and those first few months of free updates carried a lot of weight. The December 2014 careers update was one of the bigger early patches, adding four new career branches across two existing career tracks, the much-requested bb.moveobjects cheat code, career-specific outfits and reward objects, gallery improvements, and a batch of holiday content including the free Holiday Celebration Pack.
For anyone revisiting early Sims 4 history or trying to understand when specific features arrived in the base game, here is a full breakdown of what the December 2014 update included and how to use the parts that still work today.
Four new career branches
The update expanded two of The Sims 4's existing career tracks with a pair of new branches each.
The Business career received two new top-level paths. Sims climbing the corporate ladder could now branch toward becoming an Angel Investor or a Business Tycoon (referred to in the original Norwegian post as "engelinvestor" and "forretningsmagnat"). These two branches gave the Business career a clearer split between the financial side and the empire-building side of the corporate world.
The Athletic career also picked up two new branches. One path led to the Hall of Fame, while the other let Sims compete for the title of Mr. or Miss Solar System, the game's tongue-in-cheek bodybuilding championship. Before this patch, both careers had felt limited in their endgame options, so doubling the branch count was a noticeable improvement for players who spent a lot of time on career progression.
Each new branch came with its own promotion track, meaning new daily tasks, performance metrics, and career-level milestones from the point where the path splits onward.
Career outfits, rewards, and career rooms
One of the smaller but more visible additions was career-specific outfits that updated as a Sim moved up through the ranks. The Athletic career branches were the standout here: the Hall of Fame path eventually rewarded Sims with a gold tracksuit, which became a minor community favorite for its over-the-top look.
Beyond clothing, each career branch introduced unique reward objects and interactions. Business-track Sims could open the ability to give fake investment tips to other Sims, while Athletic-track Sims gained the option to offer personal training. These social interactions added flavor to career progression and gave high-level Sims something to do with their expertise outside of work hours.
The update also added career reward rooms in Build Mode. These were pre-decorated room templates styled around the Business and Athletic careers, designed to give players a quick way to furnish a home office or personal gym that matched their Sim's professional life. While experienced builders might skip these, they were a useful shortcut for players who preferred gameplay over construction.
The bb.moveobjects cheat
For many players, the bb.moveobjects cheat was the single most important addition in this patch. Move Objects had been a staple of earlier Sims games, and its absence at launch was a frequent complaint. This update brought it back as a cheat code, and it remains one of the most widely used cheats in The Sims 4 to this day.
The cheat lets you place objects freely, ignoring the grid snapping and collision rules that normally prevent items from overlapping. This opens up a huge range of building techniques: layering objects to create custom furniture, tucking decorations into tight spaces, overlapping plants for fuller landscaping, and combining items in ways the game would otherwise block.
Here is how to activate it:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+C to open the cheat console.
- Type
testingcheats trueand press Enter. - Type
bb.moveobjectsand press Enter. - Press Ctrl+Shift+C again to close the console.
- To turn the cheat off, repeat steps 1 through 4. The command toggles on and off.
There is one important caveat that the original guide flagged and that still applies: once you place an object using bb.moveobjects and then turn the cheat off, you should not try to move that object in normal mode. Doing so will break the "moveobject" placement, snapping the item back to default grid behavior and losing whatever custom positioning you had set up. If you need to adjust objects placed with the cheat, turn bb.moveobjects back on first.
This cheat opened the door to an entire building subculture within The Sims 4 community. Builders started layering beds with curtains to create canopy beds, combining shelving units into custom wall displays, and stacking terrain decorations for more natural-looking outdoor spaces. If you have ever watched a Sims 4 speed build on YouTube, you have almost certainly seen bb.moveobjects in action.
The Business Gnome and gallery filters
Two smaller additions rounded out the non-holiday portion of the update.
The Business Gnome was a new collectible garden gnome variant that broke from the usual gnome personality. Where other gnomes in The Sims 4 lounged around the yard or hung out by the pool, the Business Gnome was described as having places to be, calls to make, and meetings to attend. It was a small cosmetic addition, but it fit the career theme of the update and added another entry to the gnome collection.
The Gallery also received updated filtering options. New advanced and modified filters made it easier to search for specific types of lots, rooms, and households uploaded by other players. At the time, the Gallery was still relatively new, and improved search tools helped players find content more efficiently as the library of community uploads grew. Later Gallery overhauls have since replaced these early filters, but this was one of the first meaningful quality-of-life passes on that feature.
Holiday content and the free Holiday Celebration Pack
The timing of this update, mid-December 2014, meant it shipped with a healthy dose of holiday content.
The most visible addition was a set of holiday sweaters for Sims in Create-a-Sim. The Sims team had run a community vote on Twitter for the sweater designs, and the winning design (sweater number four from the original poll) made it into the game alongside several runner-up designs. These showed up in CAS under everyday and cold weather outfit categories.
Beyond the sweaters bundled into the free update, EA also released the Holiday Celebration Pack as a separate free download. This pack included additional holiday decorations and festive clothing items. It was not included automatically in the patch; players had to claim it through Origin.
Here is the original process for opening the Holiday Celebration Pack:
- Log in to Origin and launch The Sims 4.
- Look for promotional banners on the main menu screen and in the Gallery.
- Click the banner to add the Holiday Celebration Pack to your cart.
- Complete the checkout process. No payment information is required since the pack is free.
- After confirming the order, close the confirmation window.
- A prompt will appear saying the content is ready to download. Click OK.
- Once the download finishes, a message confirms the pack is installed.
- Restart The Sims 4 to access the new holiday items in-game.
- Alternatively, the pack could be claimed directly through the Origin store page.
The Holiday Celebration Pack was later pulled from availability for new players during a period in 2018, which caused some community frustration. EA eventually made it available again, and it can now be claimed through the EA App (the successor to Origin). If you are a newer player who does not have it, it is worth checking your EA App library or the in-game store to see if it is available for download.
Why this update mattered
Looking back from 2026, the December 2014 careers update sits in a specific moment in The Sims 4's history. The game was three months old, the community was vocal about missing features, and EA was shipping free updates at a pace that felt designed to rebuild goodwill. The bb.moveobjects cheat alone would have made this patch significant, but the career branches and holiday content gave it broader appeal.
Many of the features from this update are still part of the base game. The career branches remain, the cheat still works exactly as described, and the Business Gnome is still out there making deals. For players exploring The Sims 4 today, these are all available without any paid DLC.
The game has changed a great deal since December 2014, with dozens of updates adding everything from toddlers to phone silencing options. But the early free patches set the tone for how EA would support The Sims 4 over its long life, and this one was among the most substantial of that first wave.
