Moonfrost, a cozy farming life sim with a magical mystery woven through it, launches into Early Access on October 12 on Steam and Epic Games Store. Developed by Oxalis Games and published by iterco, the Unity-powered game puts players in the role of a Frost Hunter rebuilding a village in a world wrecked by meteor storms from a mysterious second moon.

Moonfrost

Stardew Valley comfort, meteor-fueled stakes

The premise gives Moonfrost a hook that goes beyond the usual pastoral setup. A second moon has appeared in the sky, triggering endless meteor storms that have devastated the planet. Some people learned to channel the dangerous energy from the falling shards, and these Frost Hunters are tasked with piecing the world back together. Alongside that larger narrative, players will uncover their own character's forgotten past.

Day-to-day gameplay is squarely in the cozy life-sim tradition: grow crops, gather resources, fish, cook, and build a home that can range from a modest cottage to a full castle. Dangerous temple exploration adds an RPG layer that breaks up the routine, and a cast of 11 NPCs each come with their own storylines, fears to overcome, and relationships to develop.

What the Early Access build includes

The October 12 build covers roughly the first half of the main storyline and caps exploration content at Level 19. Relationships with the 11 villagers go up to Level 3 for now. Oxalis Games has also added expanded character customization, an in-game map, and an updated quest tracking system for the EA launch. The studio plans to deliver the full storyline in under six months, though it notes the EA period could run longer depending on community feedback. A full release is planned for 2027.

The Steam page lists minimum specs at Windows 11, 8 GB RAM, 3 GB video memory, and 2 GB of storage, with English full audio and interface support plus Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese for interface text.

A free demo is already available

If you want to try before committing, a free demo is available right now on Moonfrost's Steam page. The price is expected to increase once the game leaves Early Access.

Moonfrost joins a growing roster of indie life sims competing for attention in a crowded space. If the magical narrative and temple exploration manage to set it apart from the pack, it could scratch an itch for players looking for something with a bit more mystery than the average farming sim. For now, the demo is the best way to find out. Life-sim fans keeping an eye on other upcoming entries might also want to check out Monster Fantasy, which takes a different approach by mixing creature taming with cozy living.
