Oxalis Games has released Moonfrost, a narrative-driven life-sim RPG, into Steam Early Access. The game launched on October 12 at US$14.99, with a 10% introductory discount running it down to $13.49 for now. A free demo is also available for anyone who wants to try before buying.
what Moonfrost is about
Moonfrost puts you in the role of a Frost Hunter rebuilding a struggling village in a world that was devastated a century ago when a second moon appeared and rained icy meteorites across the land. Survivors named the mysterious substance left behind "Moonfrost," and Frost Hunters eventually learned to harness the energy locked inside those frozen shards.
The core loop mixes farming, fishing, foraging, and crafting with village restoration and character-driven storytelling. Rebuilding homes and businesses brings villagers back to the settlement, each with their own personality and story arc. You can develop friendships and romances, and decisions made throughout the game influence how relationships and the wider community develop. Press outlets have compared it to a Stardew Valley and Sims hybrid "with superpowers," which gives a decent shorthand for the pitch.
Beyond the village, ancient temples offer a more action-oriented side to the game. These locations are filled with enemies, traps, and rare resources, along with lore clues about the history of the world and the truth behind the mysterious second moon.
what the early access build includes
The current version of Moonfrost covers the first half of the main storyline, 20 temple rooms, and 11 villagers to befriend (though friendship is capped at level 3 for now). Home building and decorating are already in place with hundreds of craftable blueprints, and multiple village businesses can be restored. Oxalis Games says the full main storyline should arrive within six months, though Early Access may run longer depending on community feedback. The studio has also indicated the price will likely increase after Early Access concludes.
The game features a pixel art presentation with dynamic lighting, weather systems, and an original soundtrack. Language support currently covers English (with full audio), Spanish, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and Japanese.
early reception is split
One week in, Moonfrost sits at Mixed reviews on Steam with 49% positive ratings out of 69 reviews. That is a rough start for a cozy life sim, a genre where most successful titles tend to land well above 70% at launch. The low review count means the score could shift as more players weigh in, but it is worth keeping in mind if you are on the fence. The free demo is a good way to check whether the game clicks for you before spending.
For fans of cozy life sims that layer in RPG exploration and a mystery narrative, Moonfrost is at least an interesting proposition, sitting somewhere alongside games like Monster Fantasy in blending combat-adjacent systems with the usual farming and relationship loops. Whether Oxalis Games can address player concerns during Early Access will determine where the game lands when it reaches 1.0.
