The Sims Team held a Discord Q&A session today to walk players through the September 22 Quality of Life update, and the developers shared enough detail to fill in a lot of blanks left by the earlier patch preview. Here is what stood out.
Autonomy and behavior fixes
The constant dancing problem got real attention. Developer SimDevMorgan confirmed three separate fixes: stereos could cause Sims to spam dancing interactions in their queue (fixed, but only in new saves since the object state is already broken in existing ones), Sims will no longer autonomously queue a dance while painting, and Sims who Dislike Dancing will stop dancing entirely if a song they dislike comes on. If you have an existing save, replacing the stereo in Build/Buy after the patch should clear up the issue.
TV-watching loops are also being addressed. Sims with the Mysterious Dynasty Ideal will no longer repeatedly watch TV.
Family dynamics got a tuning pass from developer SimDevConor. Some dynamics were triggering far too often while others almost never appeared. The Jokesters dynamic moment, for example, has been toned down and should show up less frequently.
Console crashes and the expanded buff view
One of the top crash causes on console was tied to gamepad directional navigation. SimDevCarlos explained that the UI grid system for controller input was running out of memory, and the team had to completely rework how it handles navigation. That fix ships with the September patch.
Morgan also volunteered a personal favorite: the Expanded Buff View will no longer automatically close when you play at 2x speed or above. A small fix, but one that has clearly been on someone's list for a while.
Weight, calories, and the new toggle
The calorie and fitness system is getting a balancing pass, with the extremes pulled back. Engineering has also built a toggle that lets players disable weight and muscle changes entirely. You can set it globally in the Options menu, or enable and disable it on individual Sims. The per-Sim option was developer Conor's contribution, making sure players who want body changes for some Sims but not others can have that control.
No new food recipes are being added, but the team is doing a pricing and calorie tuning pass on all food items across every pack. Morgan also mentioned that the team is looking into making Sims eat leftovers before cooking new meals and moving "Open" to the front of the fridge pie menu, though neither is confirmed for October yet.
Dine Out, infants, and university
Morgan was careful to set expectations around Dine Out: this is not a refresh. But the team has put in "a lot" of bug fixes and is doing a team playthrough to see how things feel with those changes in place. Morgan wants to include a dedicated section in the patch notes listing everything that changed in Dine Out so players can evaluate the improvements together.
Infant crib issues are being fixed in this patch. The bug where infants pop out of their cribs randomly has multiple causes, and SimDevCarlos explained that the popping-out behavior is actually a fallback the engine uses when an infant needs to do something and cannot stay in the crib. The team has fixes that look solid, but acknowledged the system is complicated enough that edge cases could remain.
The University rotational gameplay bug where graduation only checked the current household is confirmed fixed, with more University fixes being investigated.
What the team is still working on for October
Several items came up that are targeted for the October update but not yet confirmed:
- Island Living's broken swim option is actively being investigated, with a proposed fix in progress.
- Plates and glasses appearing on shelves and half-walls is being looked into.
- Hot tub romantic interactions (like kissing) not working is being addressed.
- The restaurant toilet-pranking issue caught developer Conor's attention during his own playthrough, and Morgan said they would follow up.
- The team is also exploring whether more recipes can be added as Family Recipes.
The September 22 patch also includes new free Build/Buy and CAS content for children, plus the push-up fail animation that the animation team created a while ago but only now got hooked into the game.
