The Sims 4 developers hosted a Discord Q&A on September 15 to field community questions ahead of the September 22 quality-of-life update. Three devs, SimDevMorgan, SimDevCarlos, and SimDevConor, shared implementation details, workarounds, and early looks at what October's patch will target.
Here is what stood out.
Dancing, TV watching, and the stereo workaround
The long-running complaint about Sims spamming dance interactions got a multi-pronged fix. According to SimDevMorgan, stereos could cause Sims to repeatedly queue dancing, the "Dance" interaction will no longer fire autonomously when a Sim is painting, and Sims who Dislike Dancing will stop doing it altogether. They will even walk off the dance floor if a song they dislike starts playing.
One catch: the stereo fix is not retroactive. It only applies in new saves. SimDevCarlos explained that the object state is already corrupted in existing save files, but replacing the stereo in Build/Buy after the patch lands should clear it. The team acknowledged this should probably be noted in the patch notes, which had already been sent off for translation.
For TV: Sims with the Mysterious Dynasty Ideal will no longer obsessively watch television.
Console crashes and a memory rework
Console stability was a recurring theme. SimDevMorgan confirmed one of the game's top crashes was caused by gamepad directionality and will be fixed in the September patch.
SimDevCarlos went into more detail on the technical side: because The Sims 4 still supports PS4 and Xbox One, the team has to make aggressive performance optimizations. One of those optimizations was actually causing a crash. The UI grid that lets console players navigate with a controller had to be completely reworked because building the navigation "tree" was exhausting the UI's available memory. That fix ships with the September update, and more crash work is planned for October.
October's food update and the weight/muscle toggle
October's patch will revolve around food, dining, and drinks. The team completed a calorie and pricing tuning pass across all food items in every pack, though SimDevMorgan stressed the goal was to "move the extremes" rather than overhaul the system.
The headline feature is a new weight and muscle toggle. SimDevCarlos confirmed players will be able to globally turn off body changes from the Options menu, and there is also a per-Sim option so you can disable or enable it on individual Sims. SimDevMorgan credited SimDevConor with pushing for the per-Sim granularity.
No new recipes or food art changes are planned. The focus is on bug fixes, autonomy improvements around eating and drinking, and the toggle options.
Dine Out gets fixes, not a refresh
SimDevMorgan was upfront: players should not expect a Dine Out refresh. But the team has been fixing Dine Out bugs alongside the broader quality-of-life work, and they planned a team playthrough the day after the Q&A to evaluate how the experience feels with all the changes applied. Morgan said they want to include a dedicated Dine Out section in the patch notes so players can see everything that changed in one place.
When a player suggested letting family members fill restaurant staff roles, Morgan called it "a very cool idea" but said it would require more work than the October scope allows.
Several other quality-of-life items came up:
- Infants popping out of cribs and not falling asleep in them: multiple fixes are shipping in September, though SimDevCarlos noted the pop-out behavior is a fallback the engine uses when an infant needs to do something and cannot stay in the crib, so edge cases may still appear.
- The Island Living swimming bug is being investigated, with a proposed fix targeting October.
- Plates ending up on shelves and half-walls: actively being looked at for October.
- Hot tub kissing interactions not working: confirmed as a known bug currently being worked on.
- Family Dynamics rebalancing: SimDevConor did a pass on how and when dynamics are awarded. Some, like the Jokesters dynamic, were triggering far too often and have been toned down.
- The University rotational gameplay bug where graduation only checked the current household is fixed, with more University fixes being investigated.
Small wins and personal favorites
Morgan shared a personal favorite: the Expanded Buff View will no longer automatically close when the game runs at 2x speed or above. "I've personally always had a vendetta against it," Morgan said.
Carlos picked the new push-up fail animation, which SimDevConor noted had been created by the animation team a while ago but only just got hooked into the game.
The September update also includes free Build/Buy and CAS items related to Children. No kits are bundled with it.
A few things the team said they are exploring but have not committed to: making Sims eat leftovers before cooking new meals, moving "Open" to the front of the fridge pie menu, expanding the Family Recipes list, and potentially locking fridges similar to the existing PC Security feature. All of these are tentative.
