The Sims Team held a Discord Q&A on September 15 to walk through the upcoming Quality of Life Update, which drops on September 22. Developers SimDevMorgan, SimDevCarlos, and SimDevConor fielded questions from community members, giving specifics on what the patch does and does not address. Here is everything they shared.
Autonomy fixes for dancing and TV watching
One of the most-requested fixes targets the infamous dancing spam. SimDevMorgan confirmed three separate changes:
- A bug where stereos caused Sims to repeatedly queue dance interactions has been fixed, though only in new saves. For existing saves, replacing the stereo object in Build/Buy after the patch should resolve it.
- Sims will no longer autonomously queue the dance interaction while painting.
- Sims who Dislike Dancing will no longer autonomously dance. They will also stop mid-dance if a song they dislike starts playing.
For the equally persistent TV-watching loop, Sims with the Mysterious Dynasty Ideal will no longer watch TV repeatedly.
Infant crib bugs and the "popping out" problem
SimDevCarlos did significant work on infant crib behavior. The bug where infants would not fall asleep in cribs is fixed, along with an issue where infants would not correctly load back into the parent carrying them.
The random "popping out of crib" issue, which affects infants without the sit-up milestone, also has fixes in place. Carlos was transparent about the limits here: the pop-out behavior is technically a fallback the engine uses when an infant needs to do something but cannot stay in the crib. The team tested as many permutations as possible, but because the system is complicated, they are watching for additional edge cases after release.
Weight, muscle, and calorie changes
The headline new feature is a weight/muscle toggle. Players will be able to globally disable body changes from the Options Menu, and there is also a per-Sim option so you can lock specific Sims while leaving the system active for others. SimDevMorgan credited SimDevConor for pushing the per-Sim granularity.
On the calorie side, SimDevCarlos mentioned that engineering is working on a broader rebalance for October's patch. For September, the team did a tuning pass to rein in the extremes of the calorie and pricing values across all food items and packs. SimDevMorgan was clear that this is a balancing adjustment rather than a system overhaul, and no new dishes are being added.
Console crash fixes
Console players dealing with frequent crashes during CAS transitions, lot loading, and Build Mode get targeted attention. SimDevMorgan said crash reduction is a major focus for both September and October. The single biggest crash they identified was tied to gamepad directionality for console players and is fixed in this patch.
SimDevCarlos added context on a specific technical challenge: because the game still supports PS4 and Xbox One, the team works within tight memory constraints. One legacy performance optimization was actually causing a crash, so they had to completely rework how the UI grid handles controller navigation to stay within memory limits.
Dine Out gets bug fixes, not a refresh
When asked about Dine Out, SimDevMorgan set expectations carefully. The update includes a batch of Dine Out bug fixes, and the team was doing an internal playthrough to evaluate how the experience feels with everything applied. But this is not a Dine Out refresh or major content pass.
Morgan committed to including a dedicated Dine Out section in the patch notes so players can see all the changes together. The developers also acknowledged related frustrations like customers pranking toilets in player-owned restaurants and said they would follow up on it, though it is not currently being tracked as a fix.
University, Family Dynamics, and other targeted fixes
The rotational gameplay bug for University that made the pack nearly unplayable for household-swappers is fixed. The underlying issue: when Sims graduated, the game only checked the current household rather than all enrolled Sims. Additional University fixes are also being investigated.
SimDevConor rebalanced Family Dynamics so that overly frequent dynamics (like Jokesters) are toned down and rarer ones appear more often.
A personal favorite from SimDevMorgan: the Expanded Buff View will no longer automatically close when the game runs at 2x speed or above.
What is still being investigated
Several items came up that are not in the September patch but are on the team's radar:
- The Island Living no-swim bug has a proposed fix targeting October but is not locked in yet.
- Sims placing dirty plates on shelves and half-walls is being actively investigated for October.
- Hot tub romantic interactions (like kissing) not working is currently being addressed.
- Expanding the Simple Living lot challenge to cover pressure cookers, popcorn machines, and ice cream makers is not planned, but the team is open to community feedback pushing it forward.
- Locking fridges is not confirmed, but the team is looking into related quality-of-life fridge changes, like moving "Open" to the front of the pie menu and making Sims eat leftovers before cooking new meals.
- More recipes being added as Family Recipes is actively being explored but still a work in progress.
Free content and new animations
September's patch includes free Build/Buy and CAS items related to Children, though details are being saved for the patch notes. No kits accompany this update.
The team also hooked up a push-up fail animation that had been created by the animation team a while back but never implemented. SimDevMorgan noted this was a special case and players should not expect new animations to become a regular part of QoL updates.
The full patch arrives September 22. The team emphasized they are doing extensive testing and risk-based review on fixes, but acknowledged that with a patch this large, some new issues can slip through.
