The Sims 4 team held a Discord Q&A session on October 20 to break down the design thinking behind the October 27 patch, and the conversation turned up a few details the patch notes preview did not cover, including a tease for what comes next.
Why your Sims kept leaving the restaurant table
The most entertaining thread in the Q&A revolved around Dine Out autonomy. Developer SimDevConor described a playtest session where every diner stood up mid-meal to start dueling with swords, courtesy of the Royalty & Legacy pack. That moment apparently sealed the fix. SimDevMorgan shared several of the patch note descriptions for these, each one calling out a specific interruption:
- Sims will no longer get up to duel each other with swords while eating at a restaurant.
- Sims will no longer leave the table to give themselves a pep talk in the mirror.
- Sims will no longer abandon dinner to play with paper airplanes.
- Customers will no longer leave their table to dig in the trash.
There are roughly 11 of these in total. The team did not change food delivery timing directly, but they expect the autonomy fixes to speed things up. SimDevMorgan also noted that restaurant layout matters: the more space Sims have to walk, the longer service takes. Something to keep in mind if you build your own venues.
Calorie tuning by hand, one recipe at a time
A designer on the team built a spreadsheet covering every recipe in the game, including baseline prices and serving variants, then went through each entry to suggest new calorie and price values. SimDevMorgan and SimDevConor reviewed the sheet before the designer updated each recipe in the game files.
The goal was a light touch. Some calorie values went up, some went down, and a batch of foods that shipped with zero calories were corrected. A handful of zero-calorie items were left intentionally, including salads. The reasoning, per SimDevMorgan: "We know that isn't realistic, but we also wanted calories to feel somewhat intuitive. Like if you're trying to eat foods that won't increase weight gain, we didn't want the player to feel like the game wasn't meeting expectation."
The body-change toggle sits alongside this. If a Sim's toggle is off, anything that would alter weight or muscle is negated, including Scientist potions and Satisfaction Point reward store potions.
TV locking, fridge locking, and the features that did not make it
One of the smaller quality-of-life additions is the ability to lock televisions the same way you can lock computers. The example given: you build a playroom for a child Sim, but the adults keep gravitating to that TV. Now you can restrict it to specific Sims.
Fridge locking was requested too, but the team said it proved too complex to tackle for this patch. SimDevMorgan asked players to report the specific situations where they feel Sims should not be using a fridge, since those individual cases are easier to address as bugs.
Other stray fixes that came up in the Q&A:
- The Edit Outfit button for restaurant uniforms is working again (though not yet for Get to Work or vet clinics).
- Over-autonomy for the Pressure Cooker from For Rent has been fixed.
- 375+ recipes now work with the Family Recipes feature, up from a much smaller set.
- A corrupted-lot issue that caused infinite white screens on load now shows a warning. The lot itself may need rebuilding, but the rest of the save, including Sims and other lots, should be intact.
- One of two bartender bugs is fixed. The second is still under investigation.
SimDevMorgan also mentioned that free Build Mode items and CAS outfits for Elders are included in the patch, with full details coming in the patch notes.
A Seasons and Events update is on the horizon
The Q&A ended with a tease. SimDevMorgan confirmed the team is planning a Seasons and Events (parties) themed quality-of-life update for sometime in 2027 and will hold another Dev Drop In "in the coming months" to gather player feedback and ideas before that work begins.
When asked whether garden produce pricing might be adjusted, SimDevMorgan said it was not part of this update but "could work well with a Seasons-themed QoL update if we did something like that in the future." That is about as close to a hint as Q&As get.
