HoYoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, is stepping into the life sim genre for the first time. Petit Planet launches globally on December 4 across PC, iOS, and Android, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for 2027.

A planet-building life sim from a combat-game studio

Petit Planet drops combat entirely. Players take on the role of a "Star Keeper" who builds and cultivates a personal planet alongside Oumuamua, a spirit from a place called the Starsea. The core loop revolves around planting "Luca Seeds" that grow into trees and gradually reshape the terrain, seasons, and ecosystem of your world.

HoYoverse describes the game's focus as customization, exploration, and social interaction. More than 1,000 types of clothing and furniture can be earned for free through in-game activities, and those items feed into decorating your planet and interacting with neighboring characters.

Exploration, markets, and sharing

Beyond planet-building, the game includes "Starsea Exploration" for visiting other regions and a "Galactic Market" where players can participate in mini-games and auctions. Social features let players share their creations with each other. PC and mobile players will share cross-platform connectivity at launch.

Over a year of testing

Petit Planet was first revealed in September 2025. HoYoverse ran a first closed beta in November 2025, a second test in April 2026, and a final beta from September 20 to October 19 this year. That extended testing cycle is a departure from the studio's usual approach and suggests they treated the genre shift carefully.

Why this matters for the life sim space

The life sim genre has been expanding fast. Loftia just entered early access, Paralives is building momentum in Steam Early Access, and inZOI continues to develop its own vision. A studio with HoYoverse's resources and global player base entering the space adds a very different kind of competitor, one with experience running large-scale live-service games and an established cross-platform infrastructure.

Whether Petit Planet's planet-growing, seed-planting approach resonates with life sim players the same way its RPGs captured action fans remains to be seen, but the December 4 launch will be free to try on both PC and mobile.
